Despite the fact that colour photography has been around for over 100 years, black & white still refuses to go away. Perhaps this is because, paradoxically, even though colour is more modern, b&w is more timeless. Or perhaps it’s because mono is purer, reducing images to the key ingredients of light, tone, shape and form. In this week’s special issue we discuss the legacy of the late Mary Ellen Mark with her husband, Martin Bell; showcase great b&w landscapes, wildlife, portraits and documentary work; and explain how to create stunning b&w images from both digital files and film.
